Salvation is God's free gift to us; but we must accept it.  We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin's penalty.  When we change from our self-ruled life, turn to Jesus in faith and put our trust in him, we are saved. Our belief, faith, and trust are evidenced by our belief in Jesus as the Son of God who died for our sins and rose from the dead, repenting of our sin, confessing that Jesus is Lord, and being immersed in baptism.
